Towards empowering and achieving academic excellence in Dental professional students
Vision
For student intervention on nurturing their self-confidence to speak effectively, to motivate and encourage them to improve their learning capabilities, to self-discipline themselves and focus towards their career.
Problem Findings
First year subject’s faculty had identified students with lack of self-confidence and motivation to learn, communicate confidently and effectively. Thereby, this workshop was programmed for student intervention on nurturing their self-confidence to speak effectively, to motivate and encourage them to improve their learning capabilities, to self-discipline themselves and focus towards their career.
Planning
A workshop on Intellectual Learning in Dentistry Practices for the first year BDS students had been designed and arranged at VEDIC from December, 2016 onwards to nurture their learning capabilities, to build self confidence to communicate effectively and to develop focus towards their career.
Objective
At the end of this workshop, learners would be able to:
- Identify their thinking style, intelligences, personality & learning style
- Cultivate self-responsibility and self-discipline
- Use behavioural theories for self identifying & positioning
- Identify learning needs, qualities & strengths
- Practice disciplinary thinking with demonstrations
- Use cognitive theories for learning courses
- Promote learning methods and tools
- Identify work interest and positioning
- Self-assess leisure and work interest
- Identify purpose of existence and life values
- Interrelate skill, knowledge, competency
- Grow from knowledge to wisdom
- Generate positive outlook and nurture positive thoughts/mind-set
- Overcome fear and prejudice

- Relate practice to skill construction to job success
- Grooming, negotiation skills, body language, communication credentials

Resolution
Learners had been trained and nurtured through active, experiential, problem-based, solution-based and inquiry-based learning and SWOT analysis. Learners also experienced positive edge reinforcement through presentations, team building activities, role plays. Their inter-personal skills had been developed through smart thinking, team performance and assessments. Their conversation building ability and Six-Hats thinking had been discussed and practiced through various activities. Learners also enhanced their communication credentials through continuous evaluation and feedback in these four days. How to create focus towards their career plans had been discussed and goals were set to help them to be more focused. Think, Read, Write & Discuss model had been discussed and practiced to help them enhance their learning capabilities. Grooming, body language, how to face an interview, how to be polite, how to address a crowd, how to do a presentation had been discussed. Mock Interview had also been practiced.
Outcome
Learners were receptive, highly motivated, determined and self-driven to position themselves in their chosen career. Setting goals for their future had given them a clear picture towards their future plans. They could collaborate and work with anyone without any inhibition in a team which helped them to believe in the team building activity. They learnt the art of learning through Think, Read,Write & Discuss model. They developed self confidence and liking towards the course. They came to know the purpose of learning and wished to create success stories for themselves in their chosen career.
